upgrade the audio system in Toyota Fortuner 2008

Postby imoutaweh » Sun Aug 15, 2010 2:21 pm

I have Toyota Fortuner V6, 4.0. full option 2008 Model

It has Toyota Audio,DVD,Navigation System
the Manual says it has 6 speakers. but I think they meant 4 speakers and 2 tweeters

The Audio System is very disappointing and I would love to improve/upgrade.

I love base sound, and I was thinking adding a Subwoofer might get me a better sound.
I am in the dark side for car audios, and I am not sure how to do so.

I visited 2 shops this morning and it looks that will cost 1500-1600 Dh.
my initial budget for this upgrade is 2500 Dh
They suggested the below.

1- 1000 W Tube subwoofer (Kenwood @300 Dh) or (JBL @400 Dh)
2- Amplifier 4 chanels, (Kenwood 640W @ 550 Dh or Kenwood KAC 720 W @600) or JBL GTS A604 640W @ 500 Dh)
3- 4 new speakers (kenwood @400-500 Dh) not sure how many W.
4- Audio filters @ 100 Dh.
5- Wiring 150 Dh

-They will keep the same tweeters without replacement.

Any suggestion/comments would be highly appreciated.

Many thanks

Glad that you posted what you have been offered. A typical local installer setup.

From the setup you mentioned you would get a bit more of punchy bass and nothing else.
:o

The one mentioned below is a decent setup and I would recommend you got for this if you are planning to keep your car for long.
This would have good sound clarity and moderate bass that wouldnt disappoint you.
The items are hand picked and matched to the power and performance rating.

Option A

Front Speakers - Speakers + Tweeters

Focal Access 165A1 Component speakers
This has seperate tweeters are these speakers are know for the quality audio they produce.
You can google the Model 'Access 165A1' to find more about them.

Rear Speakers -

Focal Polyglass 165CVX
This has built in tweeters and they sound awesome.

Amplifier 1
DLS CA41
4 channel amplifier for the speakers

Amplifier 2
Earthquake PH800W/2
2 channel amplifier used for powering the subwoofer.

Subwoofer
Kicker VCVR12 (4ohms)
Single subwoofer with enclosure made by Kicker.

Kicker Power wire Kit (4 AWG)

Kicker Power distribution block

Installation with life time guarantee

Total is AED 3900

Its clearly out of the initial budget you mentioned but definitely worth every penny.

Thanks Neo for quick response and the time spent getting all the details
It looks I need to re-consider the budget allocated for the intended upgrade.

SPEAKERS:

I agree that the speakers should not be compromised. And thus the speaker you suggest in ''Option one'' sounds tempeting

Focal Access 165A1 Component speakers
Focal Polyglass 165CVX

Are these availble in the same sizes of the factory 4 speakers and they can replace them esily with no modification to the car?!

BASE and Subwoofer

you mentioed in the first option options ''moderate bass that wouldnt disappoint you''. My love to base sound is what initiated the whole idea of the upgrade.
I am really looking for awasom base sound if possible.
is Dual subwoofer better than Single subwoofer ?!

Amplifier

you mentioed in in the first 2 options the need for 2 Amplifiers. /And I have concern about space where both would be located. Already one seat is ocupied by teh navigation box.
thus a 5 channel or 6 channel single Amplifiersound more practical in terms of space and battery life.

Installation:

How many hours it will take to fix the upagrade.

Many thanks again

Focal is undoubtedly very good and you would hear good feedback here.

Speaker installation:
We will not cut metal to fit them on your car. We might have to fabricate wooden rings to ensure they are securely mounted to the actual panels. This is a normal procedure in any decent installation.

Subwoofer Installation:
We have installed Kicker DDS124 (Kicker Dual Sub) in Fortuner. It takes up the exact space left after you open up the last seat. Which means you can still unfold your small seats in the rear with the subwoofer in the trunk. The twin Sub would sound loud enough of any normal listener.

The single subwoofer VCVR box mentioned is a more advance sub and I would recommend it with a separate amplifier.

Amplifier:
I am pretty sure the JBL GTO5355 can easily fit under the rear seat as we have done it numerous times.

Conclusion:
Five channel mentioned here is really awesome because of the price vs Performance. We are still pushing ahead the special introductory price for few more days. If you are going for that amplifier then its better you stick with Kicker DDS124 (Dual Sub).

Installation:
We are looking at stripping your vehicle apart. Jst kidding.
We will have to remove the front seat and door pads to install the amp and speaker.
Power wire needs to be pulled from the front. So basically we recommend you leave the vehicle on a thursday evening and pick it up on saturday.
I guess you might have heard of 3 hour full installation at the places you enquired before.

We maximize on the quality of the job and quality comes with patience and hard work. :)

Hope the above info helps.
