70's Land Cruiser 2010 - Sound Proofing

Postby Neo » Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:15 pm

Owner:
Vehicle: 70's Land Cruiser (2010 Model)
Existing system:
Pioneer Head Unit
4 inch Factory Pioneer Speakers in the front dash
No rear speakers

Proposed setup:
3.5 Inch Kicker Front Co axials
Earth Quake 1 inch Tweeters
6930 Kicker Co-axials

Requirement:
Upgrade the sound system to something that sounds little better. Improve sound clarity without using the amplifier. No subwoofer requested due to the space constrain. Vehicle will be daily driven and used for desert safari.
Main Requirement is to completely sound deaden and sound proof the car since the factory setup is good for extreme rough use and vehicle is built to last.

Factory panels are bare minimum and very thin.

Customer purchased the items from here.
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/
Very informative website for Sound Deadening solutions.

The following items were provided

CLD: Constrained Layer Damper. What we have traditionally called "Sound Deadener". Controls panel resonance.

CCF: Closed Cell Foam. A durable and moisture resistant sponge-like material well suited to vehicle use.

Extruded Butyl "Rope": This is the same great butyl adhesive used on the CLD Tiles in a handy 3/8” cylindrical form. Use it to stop rattles, isolate panels and mount speakers

First layer of CLD with be applied to flat surface prone to resonance. (25% coverage)
Closed cell foam will be cover the CLD in a complete sense (Almost 100% coverage)
Rope will be applied in between door panels and safety bars to avoid rattling and resonance.

Unexpected issues:
Installation of front Speakers - Custom panel was required (Aluminium panel wrapped in rexin)
Installation of rear speakers - custom panel was required (Aluminium panel wrapped in rexin)

That stuff gotta come off one way or the other because it wont help in anyway.

Better not to meddle with the factory dampening. And no use reinventing the wheel by breaking it and applying the CLD. We decided not to waste the CLD by putting it on top of the factory dampner.

Thanks very much for your hard work on my 70-series truck. The improvement in quietness and sound proofing has made a big difference to the comfort of driving, and I'm much happier with the sound quality. Now must try to resist the urge to make further modifications!
